Innovate UK and the Office for low emission Vehicles (OleV) are to invest up to £10 million in a single consortium to develop a pilot line to understand how to produce high-voltage electric vehicle batteries at a rate that can later be scaled up for commercial production.
Programme: Collaborative research and development
Award: Up to £10 million
Opens: 20 Apr 2015
Registration closes: 27 May 2015
Closes: 03 Jun 2015
Support phone number: 0300 321 4357
The aim is to bring together and develop the best UK capability and expertise in all areas of battery technology for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles - beginning with cells and cell modules - to produce complete high-voltage battery packs and provide the necessary control systems and validation testing that is critical for delivering optimum performance on the road.
Proposals must be collaborative and may be led by a business or research organisation. We expect to fund a single project with work packages of both industrial research and experimental development. For industrial research, large commercial partners will generally attract up to 50% public funding for their project costs, medium-sized businesses up to 60%, small businesses up to 70%, and research organisations up to 100%. For experimental development, large business will generally attract up to 25% public funding, medium-sized businesses up to 35%, and small businesses up to 45%.
The successful consortium should include a research organisation, at least 2 vehicle manufacturers, at least one industrial supply chain partner, and at least one SME.
We expect the project to range in size from total costs of £15 million to £20 million, although we may consider a project outside this range.
This is a two-stage competition that opens for applicants on 20 April 2015. The first stage is a written application. Selected applicants will be invited for an interview at the second stage.
