This event wanders the world, being largest when in China. After being in Los Angeles then Korea it is now taking place in Montreal Canada with a nominally 136 stand exhibition (actual count rather less) and an almost exclusive focus on land vehicles. This includes strong representation from car makers, some component and service suppliers, those making charging stations, the Korean, British and German stands, and quite a few Canadians.
Purportedly the leading global event on the subject, it raised eyebrows when the press conference at the opening was almost entirely in French and some stands have only material in French.
The USA, China, France and Tier One automotive suppliers are under-represented. There are many conferences and some visits during the four days and an excellent app to navigate it all.
In many respects the Electric & Hybrid/ Battery Show in Novi Michigan will be much bigger with its strength in components and batteries and 600 exhibitors. IDTechEx Show! In Santa Clara Nov 16-17 with over 250 exhibitors will be the best for representation of materials, and the dramatic new EV technologies expected in future such as structural electronics, pseudocapacitors, energy independent vehicles EIV, Internet of Things, 3D printing of electronics and radically new designs of electric aircraft. Nevertheless a close look at this medium-sized event in Canada with six parallel conference streams is revealing interesting new work. We shall cover this in a subsequent article.
There is quite a lot on fuel cell vehicles from Toyota, Honda and others in components and refuelling stations. It coincides with Samsung and Johnson Matthey writing off their investment in fuel cell vehicles so someone is right and someone is wrong. Certainly there is no feeding frenzy to buy them unlike Tesla 3 pure electric car. Tesla is absent: presumably too busy coping with its huge new orderbook.
