Travelmate is the first true fully autonomous suitcase, created by Travelmate Robotics in California. "This is really a robot which follows you around," said Travelmate founder and president Maximillian Kovtun.
Travelmate works seamlessly in crowds and doesn't require any extra peripherals, and integrates with a smartphone to accomplish complex tasks. It can move vertically or horizontally with ease. You can put more items or perhaps another suitcase on top of Travelmate when it is traveling autonomously in horizontal mode. Travelmate navigates large crowds and is able to recognize and avoid objects as needed.
Travelmate has a variety of sensors that allow it to navigate through crowds, obstacles and other complex situations and it can recognize simple gestures and voice commands. This robotic suitcase can be given a name that it will respond to and can be instructed to follow its owner. Travelmate can lock its wheels if it senses that its not following its owner anymore and a touch enabled lock system that uses a fingerprint to open the suitcase adds to security. The Travelmate is waterproof and resistant to damage.
The low energy Bluetooth module allows for a long lasting and consistent connection and the battery that powers Travelmate can be easily removed and is charged with wireless technology. The battery can be used to charge almost all electronics through a USB port and a standard electrical outlet. Multi colored LED lighting signifies the suitcase's battery level, moving direction and shows other signals.
All Travelmate models will include a built in scale that will accurately measure the weight of a suitcase's contents.
Travelmate includes a GPS chip that helps orient the suitcase and tracks its location at all times. The GPS chip can be removed and attached to other things that are easily lost.
Smart features like obstacle avoidance and the company's Follow Me system means that Travelmate is at the cutting edge of AI and autonomous movement technology, it uses machine learning to optimize its movements and omni wheels allow for markedly increased stability and range of motion.
Travelmate is fully compliant with stringent TSA regulations, and can be used at any airport. Travelmate is a robot in every sense of the word. It moves on its own, thinks on its own and talks on its own.
It is slated to roll out in February for the US market, and later in Europe and Japan.
Chinese company ForwardX has also created self driving luggage which combines self-driving tech with facial recognition and camera AI smarts, named the CX-1.
