Canada's first all-electric underground mine

REPORT: Electric Two-wheelers 2019-2029
Goldcorp Inc is building the world's first all electric mine. Borden is set to be Canada's first all-electric underground gold mine, which will be safer for employees and have a smaller environmental footprint. For more information see the IDTechEx report on electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles in mining and off grid zero-emission electricity

Located approximately 160 kilometres west of the Porcupine mine in Chapleau, Ontario, Borden has the potential to enhance the long-term economics of Porcupine, where its ore will be processed. Goldcorp Inc is negotiating with the First Nations communities in the area, and have signed agreements.

Borden is a key part of Goldcorp's plan to increase production by 20% by 2021, and is expected to comprise approximately one-third of Porcupine's production in 2020. Commercial production is expected to begin in the second half of 2019. It is intended that Boden can be remotely controlled in the future, linked to other mines around the world.

Borden will save about $9 million annually on diesel, propane and electricity and in addition miners' health should improve with removal of diesel exhaust which is classified as a carcinogen by the WHO. Underground mine workers will wear tags linked to a ventilation-on-demand system, moving air only where needed.

REPORT: Additive Manufacturing/Lightweight Mats
Sandvik AB is supplying electric mining equipment to Goldcorp Inc including developing a fast-charge system which is expected in 2020.

The Borden deposit is a new style of mineralization in the underexplored Borden Lake belt where Goldcorp's large consolidated claim package extends to a thousand square kilometres.
