Quantum/ Ford PHEV pickup success

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies showcased its Ford F-150 Plug-in Hybrid Electric (PHEV) pick-up recently, powered by Quantum's F-Drive hybrid drive system which is a derivative of the original Quantum Q-Drive with enhanced technologies and subsystems.

The F-150 PHEV has a 35-mile electric-only range, typical of latest hybrid vehicles, shifting to hybrid electric mode thereafter for a modest total range of over 400 miles. The F-Drive plug-in hybrid drivetrain has been integrated in the F-150 pick-up without impinging on cab or cargo bed space and maintains full ground clearance. This powertrain incorporates Dow Kokam lithium-ion batteries. The F-150 PHEV is designed to meet US Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards, and EPA and CARB emissions requirements.

Software and mechanical updates convert the base Ford F-150 truck to a PHEV that significantly reduces the gasoline requirements on a day to day basis. Quantum reports receiving orders worth more than US$14m from two unnamed fleet customers, and "strong interest" from large corporations and utilities.

Specification is;
  • 35 miles all Electric Range
  • Easy recharge using 110 V or 220 V outlet
