Energy density, fast charging and safety remain key focus points in the development of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. But as the performance and energy density of todays iterations of Li-ion batteries start to reach their ceiling, where will improvements come from?

Developments to materials and cell chemistry are often emphasized with the commercialisation of solid-state or silicon anode batteries offering to routes to higher safety and energy density, though challenges remain for widespread adoption in EVs. Of course, lowering costs also remains fundamental to the success of the EV industry, especially in industries where EV adoption is driven by total-cost-of-ownership. As a result, LFP batteries have increased in popularity while Na-ion chemistries are being developed as another low-cost alternative, despite their intrinsically lower energy densities.

Beyond new materials and chemistries, pack design optimisation and innovations in how batteries are controlled, namely via the battery management system, also offer ample room for improving the performance and safety of EV batteries. For example, cell-to-pack batteries can help to maximise energy density while more intelligent charging algorithms can improve EV charging speeds without impacting safety.

This webinar will introduce some of the key technology and market trends seen within EV cells, battery packs and BMS', drawing from research from the updated report "Li-ion Batteries and Battery Management Systems for Electric Vehicles 2024-2034".

The webinar will introduce:
  • Recent developments to Li-ion batteries for EVs
  • Trends in EV Li-ion chemistry
  • Li-ion pack technology developments
  • Innovation in battery management systems
  • EV markets beyond cars and trends in Li-ion batteries for different EV segments
