Electric vehicles in India - Part four

Mahindra Electric Diesel Hybrid PickUp

Indian car-maker Mahindra & Mahindra, the new owner of Reva in India, entered the U.S. market in 2010 with its Scorpio SUV and Appalachian pickup truck with diesel power and a hybrid option. Mahindra will probably offer the first production diesel hybrid in a light duty application in the USA. So far the only diesel hybrids on American roads are the big transit buses now running many cities.

Senior VP of Product Development at Mahindra is Dr. Arun Jaura. He joined Mahindra a couple of years ago, from Ford, world number three in hybrid on road vehicles, where he was the Head of Vehicle Engineering for Ford's Escape Hybrid Platform. The hybrid is expected to have a price premium of no more than $5,000 before tax credits. Mahindra also announced in 2010 that it plans to launch an electric mini-truck called MaXXimo.

Bengal Enamel

In 2009, the Tara International subsidiary of Bengal Enamel Works Limited has diversified into both pure electric and hybrid on road vehicles. This included 2,3 and 4 wheelers including buses, all made at the Tara International factory at Palta, a few kilometers from Kolkata.

Tara Tiny is the lowest cost on-road, four wheel car in India at Rs 99,999, about $2450, comparable to a mere golf car in the West. It should not be confused with the car that previously held the claim of being the world's cheapest car, the Tata Nano which is ICE powered.

Aucma partnership

Partner on this is China's $1.5-billion Aucma, a leading player in the electrical vehicles and appliances segment, which provides various components. Soon to follow are three other electric car labels Tara Titu at similar price to the Tara Tiny, Tara Micro and Tara Mini and various electric buses. Initially, 60-70% of the components are being imported in CKD condition from China's Aucma.
