What Does the Future Hold for Micro EVs Following a Mixed 2024?

Small vehicles like two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and microcars are among the most electrified of all vehicle segments globally. These 'micro EVs' have quietly grown to be critical means of transport for people and goods, but while the technology has historically seen its use concentrated in just a few key regions, sales data from 2024 suggests that might be changing.

IDTechEx's new "Micro EVs 2026-2046: Electric Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Microcars" report dives deep into the data, highlighting which regions are set to see a boom in micro EVs, and which others may face more difficulty. IDTechEx forecasts the micro EV market to exceed US$90 billion in market value by 2046.

2024 sales were fruitful in some regions and weaker in others

The 2020s have been a pivotal period for micro EVs, as sales of electric two-wheelers reached an all-time high and electric microcars gained traction in cities. However, the technology has existed since the 1990s, aiming to replace the small combustion vehicles that are widely used in Asian economies, and Chinese manufacturers were the first to produce micro EVs en masse. Ever since, China has remained the dominant force within the market, and 2024 was no exception.

However, sales data also suggests that China's influence within the market could be waning. 2024 was the third consecutive year in which electric two-wheeler sales in the country have declined. While some of this can be attributed to the effects of government regulation, a major factor has also been a Chinese population that now has greater purchasing power and prefers cars over two-wheelers for their daily mobility needs.

On the other hand, IDTechEx's new report finds that sales elsewhere in Asia - especially in India and in Southeast Asia - are continuing their rapid rise. 2024 was a record year for the Indian micro EV market, but its growth is not new, rather fuelled by a consistent track record of favourable financial policies from its government over the last 10 years.

Sales figures in Southeast Asia have grown across multiple individual nations, with Indonesia seeing particular success and rising to compete with Vietnam as the world 3rd largest micro EV market. Across these regions, micro EVs continue to meet the mobility needs of people and companies well, and a combination of technological development and government policy have allowed for them to become more affordable and adopted in greater numbers.

Looking further afield, sales in both Europe and the US have struggled over the last year. In these regions, where two- and three-wheelers are less for everyday transport and more for recreation, economic downturns and general declines in EV demand have negatively impacted the micro EV sector. Europe does however have a burgeoning electric microcar industry that continues to gain interest from urban populations.

What does this mean for the future of micro EVs?

Micro EVs will continue to be an important piece of the global mobility landscape. There will continue to be a large percentage of the global population that rely on such small vehicles, and as governments stretch to meet their sustainability goals and the market and technology continues to mature and become more affordable, micro EV demand is expected to continue growing. The growth of cargo demand and e-commerce will contribute to this too, with global logistics requirements set to double before 2050.

However, there is likely to be a shift in the global centre of power within the micro EV market. IDTechEx's new "Micro EVs 2026-2046: Electric Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Microcars" report forecasts that China will be overtaken in sales first by India and then by Southeast Asia over the next two decades. Greater market saturation and shifting priorities of the Chinese population contrast starkly with the rapid demand growth and regulatory frameworks of other Asian economies, leading to differing fates for each country's domestic market.

"Micro EVs 2026-2046: Electric Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Microcars" provides up-to-date sales trends to offer greater detail into how the shift in the micro EV industry is taking place. It also lends further insights through analysis of key drivers, major player and product benchmarking, and critical market developments. Granular 20-year forecasts broken down by region, vehicle type, power, and battery chemistry lay out how the global market will grow to over US$90 billion by 2046.
