Celebrating Chinese New Year 2026: IDTechEx Highlights Rising UK Engagement with Chinese Automakers and Asia-Pacific Industry Collaboration
IDTechEx recently attended a Chinese New Year celebration hosted at Bicester Village, bringing together more than 80 senior representatives from government, tourism, trade, and industry. The event underscored the growing commercial interconnection between the UK and Asia and the rising visibility of Asian brands within the European market.

Officially beginning on 17 February and lasting through 3 March, this year's Chinese New Year marks one of the most significant cultural observances across the global Chinese community. For business leaders, such occasions also create a valuable environment for informal dialogue and relationship-building, often enabling discussions that are harder to initiate through formal conferences or industry exhibitions.
During the celebration, IDTechEx connected with BYD UK, reflecting the accelerating presence of leading Chinese automotive OEMs in the UK market. The brand's progress serves as a bellwether for the broader internationalization of Chinese automakers as they evolve from early export phases to fully scaled operations across Europe and beyond.

In 2025, BYD's overseas vehicle sales surpassed one million units for the first time, which is a milestone highlighting both strong global demand for Chinese-built electrified vehicles and the rapid enhancement of their product competitiveness, cost structures, and distribution networks. Take the UK as an example: BYD moved over 50,000 vehicles last year, up more than 600% year-on-year. That's now putting them among the top EV sellers in the UK market. And it's not just the UK. Across Europe, we're now seeing multiple markets where Chinese OEMs are hitting five-figure annual sales. The infrastructure is there, the distribution is maturing, and the scale is starting to show.
Looking ahead, 2026 is expected to be an important year to monitor how Chinese OEMs transition from rapid sales growth into deeper localization. Key areas to watch include retail and dealer network build-out, aftersales service capability, local supply chain partnerships, regulatory alignment, and the potential evolution of European manufacturing and assembly strategies. Beyond BYD, multiple Chinese automakers like Xpeng, Li Auto, and Chery are accelerating their European footprint, suggesting that competitive pressure in the European EV market will increasingly be shaped by Chinese brands across both volume and premium segments.
IDTechEx continues to analyze the global strategy execution of Chinese automotive manufacturers and technology suppliers, assessing their localization pathways, partnerships, and long-term positioning within the UK and European markets. Building on this year's engagements, the IDTechEx analyst team plans further discussions with BYD and additional Chinese OEMs in 2026 to provide in-depth insights into their evolving commercial strategies.
