Electric Mining and Cleaner Cityscapes with IDTechEx

While traditional four-wheel passenger cars may come to mind when envisioning electric vehicles, the market is far more diverse than that. Electric vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, with mining vehicles working out of sight underground and two-wheelers able to nimbly weave in and out of traffic jams. IDTechEx's portfolio of Electric Vehicles Research Reports and Subscriptions covers all the latest developments within the electric vehicle sector.

Why electrification?

One of the most obvious benefits to vehicle electrification is the reduction of harmful emissions that have long been known to negatively impact the environment. The rise of decarbonization regulations and initiatives is a huge driver for many companies within the transportation sector to start prioritizing the production of electric vehicles. Cheaper vehicle running costs with the use of electricity instead of diesel will also act as a huge incentive, especially in the face of unreliable fluctuating fuel prices. Mining machines and micro vehicles are two very different vehicle types both with great electrification prospects, with the niche markets they serve potentially seeing great financial, operational, and environmental advantages.

Key regions

Asia is currently the leading region for the electrification of both mining vehicles and micro EVs, with China leading the electric mining machine sector through the electrification of dump trucks, while Australia is expected to follow suit with large orders of electric haul trucks. In the US, lower diesel prices are resulting in less of a push for the electrification of mining machine markets, and in Europe, less mining activity will naturally result in less uptake. China, India, and Southeast Asia are expected to remain the largest micro-EV markets for some time, while other parts of the world see less demand for these vehicles.

The benefits of electric mining vehicles

Haul trucks in particular are listed in IDTechEx's report, "Electric Vehicles in Mining 2027-2047: Technologies, Players, Forecasts", to be key in the development of bringing electrification to the mining market, as they are the largest vehicles and subsequently generate the greatest number of emissions. They are predicted to contribute to the largest portion of battery demand out of all other electric mining machines by 2047, with their need for drivetrain optimization and fast charging expected to pave the way for technological development and other vehicles to follow suit.

IDTechEx expects the presence of 26,000 electric mining machines by 2047 and a market size of US$27.4billion, having grown at a compound annual growth rate of 20.7% from 2027. The benefits of investment for operators are also proposed to be great, as electricity costs replacing the costs of diesel will lower overall long-term operating costs, which will also be reduced as a result of the lack of need for engine maintenance. Despite higher initial upfront costs, IDTechEx reports that these lowered long-term running costs are likely to incentivize mining companies to invest in the machines for their financial benefits alone, independent of government regulations.

Safer working environments are another major driver for mining machinery electrification, as electric machines are quieter and produce less vibration than diesel engines, meaning communication can be clearer between workers resulting in safer sites. With cleaner air, people will also not have to breathe in harmful emissions as they work, meaning a more pleasant work environment.

Micro EVs and cleaner cityscapes

For small journeys around busy cities, such as for deliveries or personal transportation for work and errands, micro EVs could result in city air less affected by emissions. Micro EVs are also much cheaper to electrify than larger vehicles, as batteries are smaller and charging times are reduced, making the switch far more appealing. Environmental regulations and government grants surrounding cleaner air goals, particularly in Asia, will help continue to push sales. IDTechEx's report, "Micro EVs 2026-2046: Electric Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Microcars", states that the micro EV market is expected to be valued at over US$90billion in 2046, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.5% with over 68 million units predicted to be sold per year.
