The IDTechEx show is delighted to present a session on Future Battery Technologies as part of its conference 'Electric Vehicles: Everything is Changing.' This conference in its California edition will present some of the most promising battery technologies that will deliver disruptive improvements in battery performance beyond what Li-ion batteries can currently offer. We are excited to have in our conference the leading research centers and companies developing these technologies, who will share with the audience the value proposition of their technologies and how their products can solve the needs of both existing and emerging markets. The technologies that will be presented in this forum belong to the group of so called Advanced Battery Materials and Post Lithium-ion battery technologies.
The $14 billion market opportunity
Whilst existing battery technologies such as lead acid and lithium-ion batteries will dominate the battery market in the following 10 years, advanced and post lithium-ion batteries given the right conditions can potentially take a considerable dent of about 10% of whole battery market by 2026. This is mostly because some of them are already in use in niche segments that will present high growth in the following 10 years. Indeed advanced and post lithium-ion battery technologies can reach a market value of $14 billion in 2026.
This new generation of technologies has been referred as Advanced and Post Lithium-ion batteries. These technologies include silicon anode batteries, lithium sulphur batteries, sodium ion batteries, magnesium batteries, lithium air batteries, solid state batteries and lithium capacitors. Some of these technologies are not really new, however there are reasons why they have received more attention recently. This tendency has been reflected in the number of publications per technology in the last 10 years.

Why Advanced and Post Lithium-ion battery technologies now?
A new generation of battery technologies will be required in order to address the existing and future challenges of the increasingly complex energy systems our society will require in the future. Better batteries will be required not only in electric cars and consumer electronics but in emerging segments such as wearable electronics, electric vessels and aircrafts, in your house, office and communities.
Environmental regulation on transport is converging in many parts of the world, but electric vehicle deployment has been hampered by the low performance of existing battery technologies in order to accomplish comparable driving ranges in electric vehicles in relation to its incumbent petrol counterparts. Nevertheless it is often overlooked that electrification is happening not only in cars but in off-road transport, marine vessels and other non-traditional machines such as construction, mining and agricultural vehicles. At the same time new personal electric vehicles such as e-bikes and electric motorcycles are consolidating their place as mobility and leisure alternatives.
In the last 5 years new electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets have changed the way we live and interact. So pervasive has been their penetration that we now can hardly imagine our daily lives without these devices. However we are not fully satisfied with them, it is deeply disappointing how their batteries lifetime limit our connection to the world. On the other hand emerging electronic devices such as wearable electronics will not reach their full potential and penetrate the market with existing battery technologies. New batteries will need to be smaller and hold more energy.
The leading companies and research centers that will take part in our session are:
Oxis Energy, a UK based leading post lithium-ion battery developer will open our forum. They will present the progress of their lithium sulphur battery technology and market penetration progress. This promising company has steadily improved the energy capacity of their technology and effectively tapped some of the emerging markets such as wearable electronics for the defence sector, UAVs and the marine sector. Huw Hampson, Oxis Energy CEO will guide you through the adventure of challenging the status quo of the battery industry and develop a disruptive technology that has the potential of being a game changer in different industries... not in 10 years but now.
Stanford University's Dr. Zheng Chen, will continue the session by presenting his approach to solving the main challenge of one of the most promising advanced lithium-ion battery technologies, this is silicon anode batteries. Silicon anodes practical applications is limited by the short number of cycles derived from anode mechanical fractures. Dr. Chen draws inspiration from nature's ability to self-heal and applies in the development of Self-healing polymers to silicon anodes which lead to high charge storage capacity and long cycle-life.
Following the line of advanced materials, we will continue the session with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Dr. Guoying Chen. Dr. Chen's work focuses in establishing the relationships among properties, electrochemical performance, and long-term stability, electrode materials with improved energy density and stability can be rationally designed and developed. In this occasion she is coming to present her work in Electroactive Separators for Safer Lithium-ion Batteries. Dr. Chen's functionalized separators are capable of providing long-term overcharge protection for secondary lithium batteries. They are free-standing non-woven fiber membranes consisting of an electroactive polymer and a supporting polymer prepared by an inexpensive and scalable electrospinning technique.
We will continue the session on post lithium-ion battery technologies with Sion Power's John Kopera who will presenting his company product Licerion™ . This exciting technology platform combines high energy protected lithium metal anodes with enhanced electrolyte and cathode materials tailored specifically for end use. Applications include Licerion™-Sulfur batteries for extended unmanned aerial vehicle and aerospace applications and Licerion™-Ion batteries for extended driving range of all-electric vehicles.
Finally on the topic of solid state batteries, we will have the pleasure to present SolidEnergy's CEO, Dr. Qichao Hu, who will present his company exciting Anode-Less Battery. This battery technology promises the holy grail of next generation batteries: safety and ultra-High energy density. This is thanks to Solid Energy's innovative battery configuration based on a solid state electrolyte composite and extremely thin lithium metal anode (i.e. almost anode-less). This technology not only promises safety and high energy density, but manufacturability, since it can be manufactured with existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes.
