Berlin leading in electric vehicles

It was in Berlin that the first solar charged electric boat appeared. The first hybrid electric aircraft with a rotary combustion engine flew from Berlin Schoenefeld Airport. In another first, this year Deutsche Bahn will offer a fleet of electric and hybrid cars for rent to its long-distance travelers, in order to make its transportation services door-to-door in Berlin. The railway giant already owns a fleet of 700 electric cars through its subsidiary car-sharing service and it seeks to expand its reach through greater cooperation between the subsidiary and parent companies and to eventually move those services beyond Berlin.

"We have to be able to offer the best mix of mobility for every individual journey requirement," Deutsche Bahn Director Berthold Huber says.

The local organisation eMO has done excellent work promoting e-mobility in Berlin and the organisation for promoting solar powered land, water and air vehicles in Germany as a whole also sits in Berlin.

Not surprisingly then, it is in Berlin every year that market analyst IDTechEx stages its IDTechEx Show! with over 2500 paying delegates and 160+ exhibitors covering futuristic materials, components and systems of particular interest to the electric vehicle industry and also serving other industries.

Among the eight parallel conferences covering everything from the Internet of Things to energy harvesting, printed electronics and sensors is the conference, 'Electric Vehicles: Everything is Changing'. At this conference there is a stellar array of thought leaders from Toyota, Daimler, Mitsubishi and IBM to carefully chosen small developers of the most exciting new inventions.

The connected car and systems aspects are covered too. For example, looking beyond that Deutsche Bahn initiative, Dr Daniel Hinkeldein Business Development Manager of Innoz presents, "Integrated Mobility Concepts At The Interface Between Transport, Energy and ICT". His Innovation Centre for Mobility and Societal Change develops, tests and implements systemic mobility innovations. Its scientific council is composed of cross-disciplinary members and this includes representatives from research and industry. Prominent among these is Siemens, which presents on the future of electric buses, Berlin being where many of these are made.
